Review
The Ahlers Pro Arte Foundation began hosting events as soon as it had opened its first exhibition in Hanover. On 11 May 2005, the author, artist and musician Thomas Kapielski gave a public reading from Dieter Roth’s Da drinnen vor dem Auge against the background of the exhibition Dieter Roth: Books. Since then the foundation stage a large number of evening events. Following the foundation’s move to Herford, two lectures in December 2016 marked the beginning of our event programme in the new location.
Just as with exhibitions, from the very beginning the foundation has sought to offer as diverse a programme as possible with regards to the themes and formats it features. Readings are complemented by lectures and panel discussions, as well as song and piano evenings. The topics covered have been highly varied; the foundation has hosted events including a lecture by Henryk M. Broders on the socio-political situation in Germany (2007), Fritz J. Raddatz’s readings from his journals (2011) and his biography of Heinrich Heine (2012), lectures about the art historian Erwin Panofsky (2011) and about Gabriele Münter’s path to using colour (2015), as well as musical performances like Franz Schubert’s Winterreise (2012). The importance and tradition of the location were particularly foregrounded in talks by Werner Schmalenbach (2007) and Wieland Schmied (2008) about their time as directors of the Kestnergesellschaft.
Since 2017 we deepen, within the scope of six-monthly thematic focuses, the issues that are addressed also in the exhibitions. For example, in autumn 2017 the scope was on the portrait in 20th century, one year later on images of women in art, and in autumn 2019 on reading in art.
